Christine Ainembabazi

Gender: Female DOB: 8th October 2002 Status: Currently sponsored

Brief Description
When both parents passed away Christine came under the care of her aunt. The aunt cultivates land to provide for her 4 children and Christine. When we came to check on Christine she was locked in the house on her own while the aunt worked all day. The aunt is sick with HIV.

Max Eliazer

Gender: Male DOB: TBC (5yrs) Status: Currently sponsored

Brief Description
The biological parents died very early into Max's life. He has grown up in the care of his grandmother who sells greens to earn a living. Max is severely underweight and underdeveloped for a 5 year old. When we first assessed his situation we initially thought he was around 3.

Blessing Keitesi

Gender: Female DOB: 4th July 2001 Status: Currently sponsored

Brief Description
Blessing's biological mother died before telling who the father was. Blessing currently resides in Bugongi, the poorest provence in Kabale, with her Great Grandmother. The Great Grandmother is old and frail and cannot work to support Blessing.

Blessed Wenamanya

Gender: Female DOB: TBC (3yrs) Status: Currently sponsored

Brief Description
Blessed is the younger sister to Mauren. Both biological parents have passed away and the siblings are now in the care of the grandmother. Like all cases when the children are in the care of the grandmother they are in poor living and emotional condition. The grandmother struggles to provide for the 2 girls and digs to earn a living.

Mauren Mashemererwa

Gender: Female DOB: TBC (5yrs) Status: Currently sponsored

Brief Description
Mauren is the older sister to Blessed. Both biological parents have passed away and the siblings are now in the care of the grandmother. Like all cases when the children are in the care of the grandmother they are in poor living and emotional condition. The grandmother struggles to provide for the 2 girls and digs to earn a living.

Moses Kahonaho

Gender: Male DOB: TBC (3yrs) Status: Currently sponsored

Brief Description
The biological mother abandoned Moses to the father. The father disowned Moses and the stepmother tried to kill the child. Moses' biological father employed a caretaker just to look after Moses while he lives in town with the rest of his family. Moses was living out of town, away from family in very poor conditions.

Andrew Wakame

Gender: Male DOB: TBC (4yrs) Status: Currently sponsored

Brief Description
Both Andrew's parents have passed away. He currently lives with his Mother’s ex-husband. The stepfather is not working and is also trying to support two of his own children. As a consequence Andrew is very neglected by stepfather.

Junior Nasasira

Gender: Male DOB: 15th January 2004 Status: Currently sponsored

Brief Description
Junior is the youngest of 3 siblings we brought into Akanyijuka this intake. Although the surnames are different, all 3 children come from the same mother and father. Unfortunately, both parents have died from AIDS and were all in the care of the grandmother. Junior in particular was rather timid when we first assessed his situation but is settling into his new surrounds quite well.

Prudence Niwabine

Gender: Female DOB: 9th January 2002 Status: Currently sponsored

Brief Description
Prudence was probably the most malnourished out of the three children - the lack of nutrition in her diet was rather obvious from the first moment we assessed her situation. We made no hesitation in bringing her into the care of Akanyijuka. Like Junior, she was rather shy at first but we are now seeing a gradual improvement in only a few short days. It is obvious these children were all starved of proper care and attention.

Michael Kyarikara

Gender: Male DOB: 9th January 2000 Status: Currently sponsored

Brief Description
Although Michael was just outside of our age intake cut-off, there was no denying that he was in need of help. We felt that if we take Junior and Prudence then it was the right decision to take in Michael as well. We simply couldn't leave him behind after seeing his current living state. He's not as shy as Junior or Prudence, but is just as malnourished.

Christian Nahwera

Gender: Female DOB: 11th March 2003 Status: Currently sponsored

Brief Description
We found Christian in the same province as Joan (around 20mins drive south of Kabale town). Her father has passed away from AIDS and the mother is infected. It took us a couple of visits to see the mother because she was never around. It was brought to our attention that the mother was leaving Christian on a regular basis to find rest in the home of her immediate family. Since we felt Christian wasn't receiving the proper care and attention we decided to acquire the mother's consent to take her in.

Elizabeth Karugendo

Gender: Female DOB: 13th February 2001 Status: Currently sponsored

Brief Description
Elizabeth is the older sister of Joan, who we adopted into Akanyijuka earlier this year. When we first visited their home we were told that Elizabeth had turned to the streets in hope for a better life. Not long ago it was brought to our attention that she had returned home to stay with her mother (who is infected with AIDS). When we were notified we decided we would adopt her into the Akanyijuka family.

Ronus Niwagaba

Gender: Male DOB: 6th October 2002 Status: Currently sponsored

Brief Description
Both of Ronus' parents have died and he currently lives with his aunt, together with his older sister Agnus.  His Aunt currently lives with her own five children, the eldest of which (16 years) has just had a child of her own.  It is obvious that neither Ronus or Agnus have received education and are certainly not receiving the same care as the Aunt's own children. Both show signs of malnutrition.

Agnes

Gender: Female DOB: TBC Status: Currently sponsored

Brief Description
We are not sure of Agnus' exact age. Even though she looks to be above our age cut-off, her need of rescue was far greater than any of the other orphans we have seen. She has not received any education and since she is the sister to Ronus (not wanting to separate siblings) it was decided to take her into Akanyijuka.

Alex Ngabirano

Gender: Male DOB: 3rd July 2004 Status: Currently sponsored

Brief Description
Both of Alex’s parents have died from AIDS and he is currently living with his 65+ year old grandmother, along with 6 other siblings. The grandmother has nothing to offer him and is also looking after her own disabled son in a two bedroom house. Alex’s other brothers and sisters have received no education and are roaming the streets.

Joyce Mujungu

Gender: Female DOB: 12th September 2001 Status: Currently sponsored

Brief Description
When we first heard about Joyce both her parents had died and she was living with her grandmother. The grandmother has nothing to provide for Joyce.  When we came back to verify, the grandmother had given her over to someone to be used for baby-sitting. Her hope was that Joyce may get a better life with them. Even though she appears to be looked after and is going to school (only when the grandmother supplies the required money) the people who currently look after her are running one of the local bars in town, where she now resides. We felt her living conditions were not adequate and could quite easily lead to complications later down the track.

Joan Ayehemukama

Gender: Female DOB: 18th August 2002 Status: Currently sponsored

Brief Description
Joan lives with her mother and her younger brother, her older siblings have run away onto the streets in hope of a better life. The mother is currently sick with AIDS. When we returned to verify she had abandoned her children to fend for themselves. We intend to take in Joan’s younger brother when we receive the mothers consent.

Emmanuel Akampurira

Gender: Male DOB: 8th March 2003 Status: Currently sponsored

Brief Description
When the mother became pregnant with Emmanuel she sought refuge in the home of some friends. These people were not relatives. Even though they were poor they willingly brought her in to offer assistance.  After Emmanuel was born the mother disappeared. Since that time Emmanuel was raised by the mothers friends. It is rather obvious that they are unable to provide adequate food, clothes and schooling for him.
